Auto conform based on video similarity?

The NLE forum is probably the most appropriate for this one.

Often, I get asked to sync up dubbed audio for a film. That will usually mean that the old dubbed track, typically taken from an older video transfer, has to be manually edited to match the newly restored master, which is usually from the camera negative and has extra footage around the beginnings and ends of shots. This can create AV sync issues across the running time of the film and requires a lot of time consuming manual intervention.

In the cases of syncing up (for example) an older mono track of the same language, there are ways to match up the audio waveforms. But with dubbed audio, the audio waveforms obviously won't match most of the time because of the different dialog.

So, is there a way to match based on the video similarity rather than the audio similarity? In an ideal world we could have to video clips with embedded audio: New reference transfer, and then older video transfer containing dubbed audio, and feed them into some kind of process that would determine scene cut positions, then create an EDL that had the scene cuts snapped to those detected on the reference video.

    Does such a process exist?
